Cycling in Slovenia

In September 2013, we travelled to Milan & then to Padua. From here, we took the train to Trieste & then up to Lake Bled in Slovenia.

The plan was to hire bikes here & cycle through Slovenia & Croatia, leaving the bikes at Koper to be collected.

Unfortunately, My Friend required urgent cardiac surgery in October so, after a great deal of discussion, we decided to still go but with considerable modifications to our original plans! I would cycle from Bled to Koper & he would hire a car & follow.

I decided to skip cycling in Croatia & reduce the number of days cycling so we could both continue through Croatia together by car.

At Split in Dalmatia, the plan was to do a tour of the islands with Sail Croatia. I did the cycling & My Friend managed to do some limited cycling on flatter terrain & caught up with the group by boat when he couldn't cycle. The team at Sail Croatia couldn't have been more accommodating & made our holiday one to always remember. I can highly recommend them.

Postscript: My Friend's surgery was successful & he is on the road to recovery.

I created a blog for this trip which you can access from the link here.

I have also found this blog which you might find useful: Two Wheel Travel .

Cycling in the Czech Republic

Vienna to Prague
SEPTEMBER 2002

* See also From the Mountains to the Sea (below)
This was my first overseas cycling trip and at this stage I had been only riding for about 12 months. I did this trip with 3 others, all women. This was a self-guided commercial trip run by Sherpa. The bikes were part of the deal, accommodation including breakfasts were pre-booked, the luggage was moved from hotel to hotel and there was some non-bike land transport.

This was a well organised tour and a wonderful opportunity to cycle this part of the world. The itinerary is available online at Sherpa: Self Guided cycling tours in Czech Republic.

We were driven 40 kms out of Vienna and the first day's cycling was a long one across the border at Mikulov and into Moravia which is delightful. From here we travelled into Bohemia and the UNESCO Biosphere Reservation area of the Třeboň ponds; the absolutely beautiful Český Krumlov and wonderful Prague.

For more recent information, you may find this blog (written in 2012) useful, although I definitely do not agree with the comments by the author about Český Krumlov.

Prague

From the Mountains to the Sea
SEPTEMBER 2018

We cycled the Elbe River and the Czechia component started at Schmilka on the border with Germany and headed east  via Mezní Louka, Litoměřice and Melnik, travelling from here by train to the source of the river (called the Labe in Czechia) in the Krokonoše Mountains.

From here we cycled to Prague via Hradec Králové, Kutna Horá and Nymburk, taking the train into Prague from here.
